Bernard Fanning is a professional musician and singer-songwriter. After finishing school, he commenced studying journalism at the University of Queensland. His enthusiasm to pursue a music career saw his studies put on hold when he joined the band Powderfinger in 1989, taking the role of lead vocalist. Bernard is well placed with natural music talent playing  guitar, piano, keyboard, and harmonica.  His singing abilities were well complemented by his showmanship as the band's frontman, contributing to Powderfinger's widespread success over 20 years. Bernard has also been able to progress an equally successful solo career which has continued to date.   It will come as no surprise to those that knew Bernard at Terrace, that he has been able to use his career as a popular musician to speak out about political and moral matters. He has made well placed commentary about Aboriginal justice in Australia and encourage the conversation about reconciliation.    Memories of Bernard from our time at school will always be of an individual who was diligent, personable and kind. He could engage conversations in any forum about social, political  or sporting matters. As a keen sports enthusiast, Bernard played ruby and made a solid contribution to Terrace cricket being a member of the First XI.     During social occasions with good friends and I hear the familiar tunes of Powderfinger or Bernard's solo work drifts through the gathering, I am always proud to say that I went to school with Bernard Fanning.

Osher Gunsberg (GT 1991)

Osher Gunsberg (GT 1991)

Andrew (or Osher as he is now known) Günsberg is a journalist, television and radio presenter, now based in Sydney.  He is best known as Australia's go to host for hit reality TV series, such as the Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, The Masked Singer, and Australian Idol, as well as being the voice of Bondi Rescue.  Prior to launching his television career, Andrew established himself as one of Australia's highest profile radio presenters, beginning his journey as a Black Thunder driver for B105 in Brisbane, and culminating in hosting several national countdown programs and key afternoon and breakfast programs.   That Andrew has become one of Australia's highest profile media personalities will come as no surprise to those who shared their time with him at Gregory Terrace.  Andrew graduated from Terrace in 1991, and was instrumental in a period of time in the Colleges history where arts, and in particular the drama movement was experiencing a step change in popularity and profile.  Andrew was known for lead roles in consecutive Musical productions including playing Bill Sykes in the 1990 production of Oliver, where one critic noted Andrew put in an awe inspiring, blood and guts performance in a bigger than Ben Hur role…, as well as Mr Collins in Pride and Prejudice in his senior year.  Andrew was part of Terraces' first ever Senior Theatre Sports team where he would get some early career experience on the stages of the La Boite Theatre in Brisbane. Andrew was a talented guitarist as well, and was a member of several if not all of the GT bands in his time at the school.  He toured several times with many of the bands, where his fine musical performances were on occasions offset by mishaps including a double ankle injury falling over on stage at Waverly College, and losing his passport at Christchurch airport.  In addition to the above, my memory of Andrew was a larger than life figure (and I don't think Andrew would mind me saying he was larger in 1991 than he is now), sitting at the back of the 303 bus to Chapel Hill each afternoon, entertaining his mates (and All Hallows school girls), very comfortable being the centre of attention.  As I said above, its little surprise that he has gone on to enjoy a successful career in entertainment.

These games saw the then 19-year-old earn bronze as the anchor for the Aussie 4x200m Freestyle relay team.     Following in his older brother Lachlan's footsteps, Tom was announced as Swim Captain in his final year at Terrace. Winning all four of the events he swum in his Senior year, including breaking a GPS record in the Open 200m Freestyle previously held by fellow Olympian, Nick Springer, Tommy cemented himself as one of the greatest swimmers the school had seen.     In his senior year, whilst training under the tutelage of current coach Damien Jones at Rackley Centenary, Tom also competed at the 2019 Junior World Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, winning two silvers and two bronzes. A year later, Tommy also broke a World Junior short course record in the 400m freestyle at the Queensland State Championships.     Away from his heroics in the pool, possibly even more special was the letter that awaited each of the Terrace squad on their bus to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre in 2019. In the lead up to the championships that year, Tom had spent the time to write a note addressed to each boy on the swim team. Calming many of the boy's nerves, Tommy wrote of his previous experiences at GPS and a mindset that he encouraged his fellow Terracians to pursue. These days Tom is studying at the University of Queensland whilst continuing to train and hone his skills at Rackley Centenary.

He also swam in the heat of the medley relay with Ashley Delaney, Adam Pine and Matt Targett before Hayden Stoeckel, Brenton Rickard, Andrew Lauterstein and Eamon Sullivan collected the silver medal, behind the Americans, in the final. At the 2009 World Championships Sprenger broke the 200m world record in the semi-final and then placed third in the final. He also won bronze at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships for the medley relay. He decided to drop the 200m from his program and concentrate on the 100m for the London Olympics with great success. Sprenger won his first individual Olympic medal at the London 2012 Games when he won silver in the 100m breaststroke. In a strong field that also featured teammate Brenton Rickard and defending Olympic Champion Kosuke Kitajima, Sprenger did his best to wear down Cameron van der Burgh in the final 50m but the South African was too strong as he won gold and set a new world record. Sprenger's performance saw him line up in the final of the 4 x 100m medley relay alongside Hayden Stoeckel, Matt Targett and James Magnussen. The team finished 2.23 seconds behind the USA and only 0.32 seconds behind the Japanese as they took home the bronze medal.

Dr Frank Sullivan OAM (GT 1948)

Dr Frank Sullivan OAM (GT 1948)

Francis Patrick Sullivan was endowed with more than his fair share of natural abilities. He was the Terrace School Captain, Swimming Captain, First XI captain, First XV 15 captain, a feat not repeated since. He graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School in 1954. He undertook his residency at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and was an eye registrar at both the Royal Brisbane and Princess Alexandra hospitals, in Brisbane. It was about the time that he met and married his wife, Colleen. As was common at the time, he undertook postgraduate ophthalmology training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, working his way in both directions as a ship's surgeon. Upon returning to Brisbane, he entered both public and private practice, following his passion for both medical student and ophthalmic registrar training. He loved people. During his 50 years of College involvement, three generations of students and registrars benefited from his teaching and wisdom. I vividly remember attending his clinic at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, as a fifth year medical student. Frank was intimately involved with the College at a local, state and federal level. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Queensland ophthalmology registrar training program. Frank Sullivan was a registrar supervisor, College examiner, a member and later chair of the Queensland Qualification and Education Committee. He strove to develop an esprit de corps within specialty. Many was the time that registrars would sit on his back veranda attending a tutorial, afterwards enjoying an occasional beer! He served as Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee and was the Chairman of the Part II Court of Examiners. He served as Vice President, before becoming President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) in 1988- 1989. Over the years he developed a rich network of ophthalmic colleagues both within RANZCO, as well as in the United Kingdom and the United States. He was held in high esteem by his colleagues. I recall excitedly reporting to my wife that I had been asked to join his practice, Terrace Eye Centre, which he had co-founded many years before. In the latter years of his practice, he was a member of the RANZCO Training Post Inspectorate and Chairman of the Queensland Compensation Tribunal (Q Comp). In recognition of a lifetime of service to RANZCO, he was awarded our highest honour, The College Medal in 2010. For his services to the community in the field of ophthalmology, he was awarded the Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day honours list of 2011. He was a mentor to many young ophthalmologists. On one occasion, when I sought his advice regarding career direction, he responded, "… to thine self be true". He loved language. Frank enjoyed a long and happy marriage to his wife Colleen. His eight children, Catherine, Timothy, Louise, Joanna, Fiona, Gabrielle, Harriet and Annabel were cosseted and encouraged by his love and example. He loved his family, his profession and life. He was a man who lived by his credo and will be missed by many.

This obituary was provided by Dr Bradley Horsburgh,  President, RANZCO

Entertainment, interviewing icons such as Jerry Seinfeld, Harry Styles and Dolly Parton. Labelled 'the world's sexiest Australian' by Shaquille O'Neal, on his live, weekday morning show from New York's infamous NBC 30 Rock studios, Scott quickly established himself as a regular on E!'s iconic Daily Pop! program, and pioneered the network's first live Instagram show, HappE! His passion for film and TV was ignited at Terrace, and has thanked Maria Lourundous on countless occasions as the reason why he has a career in Film and TV today. He showed early promise by curating a combination of Bobby Darin's splish-splash and Fatboy Slim's funkso brothers, to see Kearny House take the House Choir win in his senior year.  After Terrace, Scott attended UQ and studied commerce and economics - however in his 4th year scored his first TV hosting role, fronting Prank Patrol. The rest is history. On a more personably note, Scott has always had a big-world view yet a never to be questioned, proud Australian attitude. In 2021, during the pandemic, Scott organised and hosted Aussie Christmas in LA – an event raising much-needed funds for the Australian Wildlife Conservancy in the wake of the 2020 Bushfires. He Partnered with great Australian brand's, including Tourism Australia and Penfold's, and gave an opportunity for all those stranded in LA, missing home, to enjoy quintessential Australianisms, for a good cause!  It was a great success, and a true testament to his personal qualities. Last but not least, Scott has used his talents and years of experience to produce some of the most wholesome yearly-content seen during the month December, as he takes his dear Grandma, Joy, around Brisbane's Suburban Christmas-Lights display's, allowing her to grace us all with her wisdom and fine critique. A well-rounded, successful, and proud Terracian.
